Heartbreak Run

I travel down this dusty highway,
struggling to work out my way
Lost in thought, a teardrop stings my eye.

I've run this road a thousand seasons.
A thousand miles, a thousand reasons.
Everything seems different this time.

The landmarks I've known -- unfamiliar;
well-trod paths now strange, peculiar.
Hues once bright cast in a shade of gray.

An overwhelming, lonely feeling
grips my soul and leaves me reeling.
Panic as I try to break away.

I start out slowly, then go faster,
hoping to avoid disaster,
Pushing at my mental boundaries.

But heartache soon leads to lamenting.
Legs, once agile, now cementing,
Can't outrun these painful memories.

Just as I fear they'll overtake me
Second wind starts blowing gently,
Easing joints and helping aches to mend.

I turn my head, look past my shoulder.
Jesus stands there; I get bolder.
Hope lies waiting just around the bend.

The moral of my little story:
Don't let heartache steal your glory,
Covering your road in deep despair.

The journey may seem dark, foreboding.
Hope may be slowly eroding.
Rest assured, our God is always there.
